Your thoughts on consulting career. Thanks!
Hi,
Please share your thought and/or comments on future prospects for career in management consulting.

I graduated with an honors law degree from a non target university. Five years of work experience since then: project management (relatively high profiled international experience), public affairs and over the last three years major international commercial/corporate US/UK law firm on the continent, with progression from junior associate to associate position, international secondment, client exposure (top multinational corporations) and etc.

I am starting MSc degree at LSE London this autumn and hoping to get into management consulting afterward (in particular, I am interested in organizational behavior, organizational development and design, change management and etc.). I am not targeting necessarily MBB, if at all, but the so-called 2nd tier companies. I am fluent in one other Easter European language and conversational in French.

What do you think about my chances? And also, should I for aim analyst or associate position due to my previous, though non management consulting, work experience? I appreciate all your comments. Many thanks.

Hi,

I believe the 2nd tier firms are still very difficult to go into. For one, if you are recruiting through a university, grads are a big thing (at least in undergrad). They aren't going to look through 3000 resumes when they can just scan for ppl who have 85%+ average and just look at those. They are only planning to hire a few anyways.

If you have work experience, focus on the results of your work. This could be saving the company X amount of money or improving efficiency by Y%. It shows you are result oriented and can add value to any company you work for. It may take some time to quantify experiences but it will definitely increase your chance.

Last, keep applying. I got rejected from all firms during oncycle recruiting for my university. But then I applied again during the summer and got a position with ACN. Don't give up!
